This morning, after sent my car for service at Kampung Jawa, I went to a nearby coffee shop or what Malaysians called kopitiam for breakfast. After ordered my all time favourite of hokkien mee soup, I sat there thinking of what to order for my drink.
Most of the time, I will just order o peng ( black ice coffee) but this morning, I wasn’t sure what to order. Maybe I am too choosy..wakkakaa…but you can’t blame me right? Penang is not only famous for food but for drinks too especially the o peng in the old kopitiam by the aunties and uncles. Forget about Starbucks. I don’t like Starbucks because it makes my heart pumps very fast…Some more, it’s damn expensive for a cup of coffee…so for those Starbucks lover, don’t flame me yeah…I’m merely saying out what I don’t like and like.
Let’s go back to our topic of the day.
What is your choice of drinks when you are in Penang kopitiam?
O Peng? Teh Peng? Milo Peng? Bali Peng? Nes Peng? Kickkapo? Cham Peng? lau hau peng ( nutmeg) ? soya drink? gu leng peng? tau jui?
There’s so many ‘peng’ over here.. hahhaaa… Not long ago, I used to drink a lot of “ampala sui puih” because I like the sour taste. Together with ‘sui puih’, it tastes very nice. Then, after awhile I switched to lau hao ( nutmeg juice). It really taste nice and very much a Penang product. Balik Pulau Market has the best nutmeg juice I ever tasted.. It’s the purest and the most “canggih” ever..
Oh yeah…I used to drink the “szuh pak hu”. It literally translates to fighting fish.
What a name for a drink… hehee…ee… It’s actually the longan juice serves in a fighting fish jar.. Of course without the fighting fish la….but let me warns you. Not all coffee shop waiters/waitresses in Penang recognize the “szuh pak hu” name. You can safely order it at most of the town coffee shop but beware when you are outside of the town.
Once I ordered this drink at Batu Ferringhi and do you know how the aunty waitress reacted?
