The ninth day of Nine Emperor Gods Festival in Penang, saw the sending off of the Gods to the sea. Colourful floats and the most important “Emperor Boat” from various Nine Emperor Gods temple paraded the roads in mainland and island of Penang. Some of the temples are said to share their floats for this procession.

I had the opportunity to witness the procession on Tuesday night. It started from a temple nestled around flats and houses not far away from my house in town. Drums and gong accompanied the procession with devotees holding joss stick as a respect to the Gods.

This Emperor Boat later was burnt at a nearby sea after the departure of the Gods.

The main float where the medium sat, pulled by the devotees to the sea. It is believed that by holding on the rope, one will get good luck and good health.
